The 'Elephants', now set to face Mohamed Salah's Egypt on Saturday in Agadir, have completed a dream quarter-final line-up, ensuring all title contenders will clash in a series of thrilling and finely balanced encounters.

Having at times faltered during their three group matches, the Ivorians, inspired by their burgeoning talent Amad Diallo – who opened the scoring – offered no quarter to the Burkinabe 'Stallions' on this occasion.

Signalling a clear changing of the guard, Ivory Coast coach Emerse Faé handed a starting midfield berth to 19-year-old fan favourite Christ Inao Oulai. This bold move saw Seko Fofana, 30, one of the pillars of their triumphant campaign two years ago, begin the match on the bench.

Indeed, it was the youthful exuberance, personified by Inao Oulai, Yan Diomande (also 19), and star forward Amad Diallo, 23, that relentlessly probed the Burkinabe defence from the outset.

Amad Diallo, in particular, proved a constant menace to Adamo Nagalo on the right flank, overwhelming him to the point of earning a yellow card as early as the 6th minute. This early pressure compelled Burkinabe coach Brama Traoré to withdraw the PSV Eindhoven defender, replacing him with Ibrahim Touré before the first half concluded (42nd minute).

The Manchester United forward, who arrived at this last-16 tie as Ivory Coast's top scorer with two goals in two matches, had already propelled the 'Elephants' into an early lead. He broke the deadlock with a clinical finish after a superb collective move culminated in his penetrating run into the Stallions' box (1-0, 20th minute).

The relentless pressure on Burkina Faso was equally potent on the left flank, where Yan Diomande consistently vexed his markers. The Leipzig winger's unpredictability, often leaving defenders guessing whether he would shoot with his left or right foot, proved a constant headache.

It was indeed with his favoured right foot that Diomande doubled their advantage just past the half-hour mark, perfectly teed up by Diallo. His powerful strike gave Hervé Koffi – who had retained his place despite a thigh injury sustained in the last group match against Sudan – no chance whatsoever (2-0, 32nd minute).

Though they continued their offensive thrusts throughout the second half, the Ivorians had to bide their time before delivering the decisive final blow. It came courtesy of Bazoumana Touré, also 19, who replaced Diomande and sealed the Ivorian victory with a sensational solo counter-attack, completing an 80-metre run before finding the net (3-0, 87th minute).
