Big day at Wembley
Manchester City and Chelsea are set to contest the most important match of the year in England: the FA Cup final at Wembley.

This Saturday, Manchester City and Chelsea are competing for the oldest trophy in the world: the FA Cup. It will be the fourth consecutive final for Pep Guardiola’s side, who will be aiming for a cup double after beating Arsenal in March and winning the EFL Cup final on the same stage. A victory would see the ‘Cityzens’ go into the final two Premier League matchdays with greater confidence.
A Premier League season that has been disastrous for Chelsea. The ‘Blues’ have been inconsistent and already know they will not be playing in next season’s Champions League. Furthermore, it is very difficult for them to secure a place in the Europa League, or even the Conference League. Thus, this FA Cup final takes on even greater importance for the London side.
It is their only chance to salvage the season, win the title and, possibly, secure a place in next season’s Europa League. Wembley will be decked out in its finest to crown the FA Cup champions on a Saturday afternoon that is expected to be spectacular both in the stands and on the pitch.
FA Cup semi-final results
- Manchester City 2-1 Southampton
- Chelsea 1-0 Leeds United
The Premier League carries on
Meanwhile, this weekend also sees the penultimate round of fixtures, Matchday 37, in the Premier League. It kicks off this very Friday with the clash between Aston Villa and Liverpool at Villa Park. The winner will secure a place in the Champions League, although a draw might suit both sides. Sunday begins with Manchester United hosting Nottingham Forest in a match with nothing at stake for either side.
At 3pm, Brentford and Everton host Crystal Palace and Sunderland respectively in their battle for European places. Brighton, who also have their sights set on Europe, visit Leeds, whilst Wolves and Fulham face off with little at stake. Sunday concludes with Newcastle v West Ham, with the London side fighting for survival.
On Monday, Arsenal have half the title at stake against already-relegated Burnley at the Emirates Stadium. The round concludes on Tuesday with the FA Cup finalists. Manchester City visit Bournemouth in a vital clash for Guardiola’s side’s title hopes and Iraola’s side’s European aspirations, whilst Chelsea host Tottenham at Stamford Bridge, with the visitors fighting for survival.
