Florentino Pérez elected president of Real Madrid
The Real Madrid president secured 65% of the vote, compared to the 35% won by Enrique Riquelme

The Real Madrid presidential elections took place on Sunday 7 June. For the first time in over two decades, the club’s members were able to choose between more than one candidate, as in recent years Florentino Pérez had been the only one to stand for the presidency of the Santiago Bernabéu.
Despite Enrique Riquelme’s campaign, which faced an uphill struggle, Florentino Pérez’s victory is indisputable. The president has been re-elected with almost twice as many votes as his opponent. Despite a disastrous season both in football, where Real Madrid have won no titles and Castilla have failed to secure promotion to the Hypermotion League, and in basketball, with a year without any silverware, the members have placed their trust in Florentino.
Enrique Riquelme has shown that he can be an alternative to Florentino, who will turn 80 in March. If the businessman decides to stand in the next elections, he will have had more time to prepare his candidacy and it is very likely that those 35% of the votes will increase until he secures the more than 50% required, should the candidates remain the same.
Real Madrid election results
- Florentino Pérez: 65% of the vote
- Enrique Riquelme: 35% of the vote
José Mourinho is the new Real Madrid manager
With Florentino Pérez’s victory in the Real Madrid presidential elections, the new manager at the Santiago Bernabéu has been confirmed. It will be a familiar face, José Mourinho, who will embark on his second spell at Chamartín with the aim of restoring Real Madrid to championship glory and ending Barcelona’s dominance in Spanish competitions.
Furthermore, the Portuguese manager wants the Whites to be competitive in Europe and to put the past behind them from his previous spell at Real Madrid. José Mourinho wants the Champions League. In the three seasons he spent at Real Madrid, he was knocked out at the semi-final stage. To this end, the Santiago Bernabéu side are already working on new signings.
The first two will be defenders. On the one hand, centre-back Ibrahima Konaté will arrive, a free agent from Liverpool after his contract expired. On the other hand, they will sign right-back Dumfries after paying €20 million to Inter Milan. Another area in need of strengthening is midfield, where Real Madrid need a playmaker to build the team’s attacking play.
