Premier League hat-trick in Europe
Arsenal will play in the Champions League final, Aston Villa in the Europa League final and Crystal Palace in the Europa League final.

On Tuesday, Arsenal beat Atlético Madrid in a packed Emirates Stadium to secure their place in only their second Champions League final in history. Mikel Arteta’s side will be playing for the European title for the first time in 20 years. It wasn’t the Gunners’ most brilliant performance, but they were very solid at the back and Saka’s solitary goal proved enough.
On Thursday, it was the turn of the Europa League and the Conference League. In the latter competition, Aston Villa thrashed Nottingham Forest to overturn the first-leg deficit in the all-English semi-final. A Premier League final was all but guaranteed, and Unai Emery’s side proved far superior at Villa Park, with Aston Villa returning to a European final 44 years on.
And in the Conference League, Crystal Palace made history. The London side had taken a very positive result from the first leg, and at Selhurst Park they did not disappoint, once again beating Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, who tried hard throughout but were outplayed by the English side. This is the south London club’s first European final.
Results of the second legs of the European semi-finals
- Arsenal 1-0 Atlético Madrid (2-1 on aggregate)
- Bayern Munich 1-1 PSG (5-6 on aggregate)
- Aston Villa 4-0 Nottingham Forest (4-1 on aggregate)
- Freiburg 3-1 Braga (4-3 on aggregate)
- Crystal Palace 2-1 Shakhtar Donetsk (5-2 on aggregate)
- Strasbourg 0-1 Rayo Vallecano (0-2 on aggregate)
Going for the treble
Having secured a representative in every European final, the Premier League is looking to make history by winning all three competitions. First up is Aston Villa, who face Freiburg in the Europa League final in Istanbul on 20 May. The Birmingham side are favourites on the strength of their quality and their manager’s experience. Unai Emery will be aiming for his fifth Europa League title.
A week later, on Wednesday 27 May, the Conference League final will be played in Leipzig. It will be a historic occasion, as it is the first final for both Crystal Palace and Rayo Vallecano. The winner will claim their first-ever European title. Both teams have shown that with humility, hard work and without exorbitant budgets, impressive results can be achieved.
Finally, the Champions League final will bring the European club season to a close. In Budapest, Arsenal will be aiming for their first-ever Champions League title in their second final. PSG, for their part, are playing in their third final and are looking for their second consecutive title following last year’s victory in Munich against Inter Milan. If Crystal Palace and Aston Villa have won their finals, Arsenal can make history for the Premier League.
