Aston Villa, Europa League Champions
The players coached by Unai Emery gave Freiburg no chance (3-0) in the final played at Besiktas and were crowned champions of Europe’s second-tier competition.

The first half-hour of the Europa League final was evenly matched. Freiburg even had a dangerous chance on a free kick from the wing. But it was merely a mirage. In the final quarter of an hour of the first half and throughout the second half, Aston Villa showed why they had arrived in Turkey as the favorites. The English side is a much better team than Freiburg.
The final was decided in the final minutes of the first half. After an even start, Unai Emery’s men took control of the match, and Tielemans put his team ahead by finishing off a great set piece with five minutes left before halftime. The Germans were reeling, and the English took advantage. Buendia scored the second, another stunning goal, on the final play of the first half.
Thus, Aston Villa went into halftime with a two-goal lead. Freiburg tried to react at the start of the second half, but the difference between the two teams was evident. To avoid any scares, Rogers finished off a great assist from Buendia in the six-yard box to seal Aston Villa’s victory. The final half-hour was a triumphant stroll for the Birmingham side.
A Perfect Season
With this title, Aston Villa caps off a brilliant season. Last Friday, they secured their spot in next season’s Champions League, which they would have qualified for regardless of this Europa League title. With this final victory, the club wins a European title again 44 years later. The last one was the European Cup won in 1982. It is Aston Villa’s best season in decades.
This Europa League title is the icing on the cake of the work Unai Emery has been doing since joining the club in 2022. The Basque coach has instilled an unquestionable competitive spirit in Aston Villa. He has established the team among the Premier League’s elite, securing several European spots in recent seasons—two of them for the Champions League, where they reached the quarterfinals last year.
Unai Emery has proven himself the king of the Europa League, as this is his fifth title following the three he won with Sevilla and another with Villarreal. But he doesn’t want to stop there. Now he wants the team to be just as competitive in the Premier League and will aim, at the very least, to match their quarterfinal run in Europe’s top competition. In addition, he will also aim to compete for the EFL Cup and the Premier League. For now, at Villa Park, it’s time to enjoy this historic season.
